The Futures Industry’s budding Beckhams and renascent Rooneys, along with a few more reminiscent of Sir Bobby Charlton, took to the playing fields at that ‘Theatre of Nightmares’ which is Powerleague in Worship Street, London EC2 last Monday, September 5th to contest the second annual Futures Fives Tournament in aid of Futures for Kids.
Taking advantage of a quiet day in the markets because of the Labour Day holiday in the USA a total of 12 teams turned out representing many of London’s prop shops with the odd brokerage firm, IT vendor and exchange tucked in for good measure.
An enthralling qualifying competition commenced with two equally weighted ‘Groups of Death’. Not so equal, however, were defeats of Oak Trading by 7-1 and of LME by Divento Financial by 6-0 almost certainly leading to the summary dismissal of the respective teams’ coaches. However, as Sir Alex Ferguson says, the table never lies and the semi-finals saw Futex defeat Schneider 2-0 and Tower Chelmsford beat holders Divento in a penalty shoot-out.
In a tightly matched final Tower Chelmsford overcame Futex by 1-0 to grab those all-important bragging rights for the next year and, perhaps a place in the European Futures Super Fives( if we’re lucky enough to find a sponsor!)
Thanks are due to James Sullivan of Divento Financial who launched the event in 2010 along with Trading Technologies (TT) who generously sponsored the event ensuring the £2,400 raised will go to Futures for Kids. Other participating teams included TT, Traiana, OSTC, Tower London, MF Global and Newedge.
Futures For Kids was launched in February 2008 by a group of people in the futures industry in Europe, with the aim of raising funds to support children’s charities around the world and has raised in excess of £1 million since inception. http://futuresforkids.org.uk/

FFK Golf Day in association with CME Group - inaugural event
FFK, in association with CME Group held its inaugural golf day on 4th July in the sumptuous surroundings of Brocket Hall. Some 70 golfers attended, joining teams sponsored by CME Group, Trading Technologies, Traiana, SEB Futures, Ffastfill, J.P.Morgan, MF Global, SGX, Patsystems and LCH.Clearnet.
Some splendid golf was played and the winning team was MF Global, pictured below.
IDX Gala Dinner 2011 – FFK reach its first £1million
FFK’s key fund raising event for the year was once again the IDX Gala Dinner in London on June 8th.
The dinner, hosted by Futures Industry Association (FIA) and Futures and Options Association (FOA) in aid of FFK, is now an integral part of International Derivatives Week.
In 2011 over 475 attended and the Dinner looks set to raise in excess of £120,000 was raised for the charities - bringing the total raised by FFK to date to over £1million. The event included live and silent auctions with items ranging from works of art, sporting memorabilia and various ‘experiences’. Among the live auction items was another giant 4.5kg ‘bar’ of Toblerone, a gift from Swiss Futures and Options Association (SFOA), a stay in a luxury villa in Marrakech, donated by Roy Leighton and a shirt signed by Pele donated by BM&F Bovespa. SFOA also donated an ounce of gold to the raffle.
The event also attracted associated entrepreneurial activity to raise funds. Following in the footsteps of Jeremy Grant of the Financial Times who turned up in full (and apparently 100% traditional) Scottish national dress last year - John Lothian agreed to rise to the challenge this year and through his ‘efforts’ had raised over £2k for the FFK charities.
Quiz Night and Poker Evenings raise over £50k for Futures for Kids
The second annual Quiz Night in May 2011 was a huge success with over 150 industry executives battling it out for the glory of winning the FFK Quiz Night Trophy. A very closely run competition saw Voltrex beat SEB Futures in a final tie-breaker round, with Rostron Parry behind by just one point.
There were fantastic turn outs for the two Poker Nights at the London Capital Club in April and September with entrants from proprietary trading firms, brokers, banks, exchanges and IT companies. The attendees were treated to some excellent hospitality from the Club and various sponsors while enjoying the networking opportunity.
Given the nature of our industry there is a distinctly competitive edge to these evenings with the tournaments building to exciting finales. Jon Jonsonn of JP Morgan won the April event (a trip to Las Vegas generously donated by Patsystems) while Karl Durand-O’Conner from Liquid Capital won a place at the Poker Stars UK & Ireland Poker Tour 2011.
Our events are growing all the time and in this respect we reserve a special thank you this year for 2010 Events Sponsor MF Global. Their generous donation to FFK has enabled a considerable expansion of the range and number of fund raising events this year.
Event organisers provide opportunities for FFK fund raising
FFK was present at SFOA’s ‘Burgenstock’ conference in Interlaken in September courtesy of the generosity of the organisers. Trustees present sold raffle tickets to be drawn at the event’s Gala Dinner with prizes including an ounce of gold generously donated by CME Group and the now famous giant bar of Toblerone. Over £2500 was raised.
In November FFK trustees attended FOW’s longstanding ‘Clearing and Settlement’ Dinner. FOW had kindly nominated FFK as the beneficiary charity for the Dinner’s annual raffle. With prizes generously donated by Traiana, Sungard and Ffastfill tickets were avidly purchased by attendees from the operations area of the exchange-traded derivatives community resulting in a magnificent £7,600 addition to FFK funds.

More individuals are ‘just doing it’ for FFK
Brian Daly, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley and FOA Board member took part in a cross-Channel swim in early September. This fine personal effort raised over £10,000 for FFK.
Brian swam in a team of four including two Royal Marines. Each one swam for one hour, swapping every hour on the hour until they arrived in France. They were in the 16 degree (60 degree Fahrenheit) water between 12-15 hours. Regulations stated that swimmers could only wear speedo bathing suits, one swim cap and goggles. Nothing more, except some goose fat grease.
On December 12th Roger Barton, Managing Director of Tradeweb, will be bravely taking on the Calvia Marathon in Mallorca, to raise money for FFK. To support him please go to Roger’s website at http://www.justgiving.com/Roger-Barton
Also in December Peter Shepherd, Managing Director, PIA-First Capital will be undertaking a perhaps less arduous, but nevertheless daunting, challenge.
Peter will be wearing a ‘Mankini’ for a day at a resort in Mexico where he is spending the holiday season. The day will be videoed and posted on You Tube in mid January for those that choose to watch, especially given that the ‘Mankini’ is of a Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer design! To support Peter please go to http://www.justgiving.com/Peter-Shepherd
As a result of all of this activity FFK has now raised over £1,000,000 since inception. We need more help to get to the 2 million pound mark so why not get involved?
Help FFK
reach its second million
